Sir Pat Goodman, who turned his family's baking business in Motueka near Nelson into trans-Tasman food giant Goodman Fielder Wattie, has died.

Sir Pat, who was in his late 80s, died at his Motueka home on Saturday morning, Fairfax reports.

Sir Pat's wife Lady Hilary Goodman was killed in a car crash in Australia in 2014.

The family sold Goodman Fielder Wattie in the early 1990s and Sir Pat's three sons Greg, Craig and Patrick have forged careers in business, mostly in Australia.

Greg Goodman is chief executive of commercial and industry property group Goodman based in Sydney.

The NBR Rich List estimates the family has assets worth $NZ1.3 billion.

Sir Pat was appointed a special trade ambassador for New Zealand in 1990 and was on the New Zealand Trade Development Board and the Kiwifruit Marketing Board.

He had a long association with Massey University and was a member of its Agriculture Research Foundation and patron of its Food Foundation, according to the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.

He received a knighthood in 1995 for services to business management, export and the community and later joined the New Zealand Order of Merit.
