Warriors hooker Issac Luke tried to play for Ireland at the Rugby League World Cup after being snubbed by the Kiwis.
Ireland coach Mark Ashton said Luke reached out in an attempt to switch allegiances, but didn't have enough time to get it done.
"We got a list from the NRL telling us who qualifies and Issac Luke, who qualifies through his grandparents, put his hands up," Aston said.
"I think he thought he'd probably play for New Zealand and by the time he came back to us the chance has gone.
Luke had another tough NRL season across the ditch, with the Warriors fading out of contention midseason.
New Zealand coach David Kidwell opted for young talent, selecting Knights dummy-half Danny Levi for the tournament which kicks off later this month.
Ireland start their World Cup campaign against Italy on October 29 at Barlow Park in Cairns before playing Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.
