New Zealand's Labour party has strengthened its lead over the governing National party, according to a new poll, and Jacinda Ardern is still more popular than Bill English as preferred prime minister.

As Kiwis prepare to vote on September 23, the latest 1News Colmar Brunton survey shows Labour steady on 43 per cent support while National has dropped two points to 39 per cent - its lowest rating since 2005.

New opposition leader Ardern has gained a point in the preferred prime minister stakes, leading English by 35 per cent to 31 per cent.

Support for Labour overtook that of National in a similar poll released a week ago.
